"The DK [trio] is a class act jazz/R&B instrumental blend, offering a deep, smooth rhythmic blues that drifts over a crowd like a funky blanket of fog, swirling around table talk and settling into quiet corners in mellow patches of sound.
Darrell Bridges of Long Island struck me as the quintessential jazz bassman. Laid back and easy when paving an uniformed surface for the music to glide over and hangman serious when it came to his brief, well-played solos and free form fills.
Dave King's impressive finger work along the neck of his six string [guitar] was accented with some tricky cord progressions and a practiced slide that spoke of years of experience. The guy was hot and it came as no surprise when I later learned that King, a Manhattan resident, writes a monthly column for Guitar Player Magazine.
Together, the [trio] cuts their way through such numbers as "Chicken Shack," "Ain't Nobody's Business" and "Mercy Mercy Mercy." They cover artists the likes of BB King, Take Five and Cannonball Atterly and when called for, pull off a few hits by Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Chuck Berry (with whom King once played as a member of his band) and The Allman Brothers Band."
