nathanheadphonesThe MP3 player was not his first and only success.  He not only changed the music and entertainment industry, but prior to this, he was responsible for taking three companies public.  His career includes the following visionary firsts:

-- 1st bestselling word processor for Apple named “Word Handler & List Handler” by Silicon Valley Systems  (1980)

-- 1st to bundle CDs inside magazines for free trial by “Test Drive” (1992)      -- 1st to establish a website capable of downloading music and audio books to a personal computer by  “Audio Highway.com”  (1994)

-- 1st to invent, patent and introduce the MP3 player named “the listen-up player” that currently resides in the Heinz History Museum in Pittsburgh, an affiliate to the Smithsonian.  By “Audio Highway.com”  (1996)

-- 1st to produce a major cybercast to over 2 million viewers called “Wango Tango” at Dodger Stadium featuring Will Smith, Brittney Spears, and Ricky Martin along with a host of other entertainers  (1999)

-- 1st MP4 video player sold for under $100 by “Handheld Entertainment”  (2003)

nathansideThe idea for the MP3 player was Nathan’s in 1994 and after 80 hour weeks and flying to China, South Africa and Taiwan regularly, it was released in late 1996.  Nathan maintained his 80 hours a week schedule for years to come.

In mid-January of 2004, Nathan was on the panel of speakers for the Consumer Electronics Show.  For a month prior, Nathan had complained of a toothache which his dentist treated and dismissed.  Although he felt he was fighting influenza, he continued to meet work demands traveling across the world twice in December.  While on the CES panel, Nathan was feeling ill, and forced to ask an associate to take his place.

The next day, on January 16, 2004, his world changed.  Nathan collapsed into a coma and was found to be suffering from a severe Group A streptococcal infection as a result of his tooth.  His organs were shutting down as his body was being engulfed by the same deadly bacteria that killed Jim Henson of the Muppets in 1990.

Nathan awoke in the hospital after five days of unconsciousness.  Before his coma, Nathan’s vocabulary was vast and words easily accessible.  Pouring through contracts and documents was done with ease.  He was a Mensa member and an avid reader.  Once awake, he remembers starring at a “progressive" insurance commercial on TV and found himself wondering, “What in the world does that word mean… hum, progressive?”

For two years, Nathan fought to recover his memory and gain control of his arm’s constant involuntary, unwanted movements.  Nathan survived a near death experience and throughout it all, his innate passion for making a difference drove him to re-learn what he now shares with his audiences.

Nathan has recovered and finds life a precious and wonderful gift.  He has slowed down and recently moved to Salt Lake City, Utah where he enjoys the quieter life surrounded by mountains.  By 2006, Nathan became busy with Bio-Tech and Solar Technology which concentrate on helping people live better and more comfortable lives.

Nathan’s current focus is dedicated to finding a more productive use of alternative energy.  As a consultant for a company focused on large scale use of solar energy,  Nathan thought, “Why not make this accessible to the individual person?  Yes, a personal solar charger!”

nathanschulhofIn April of 2008, he co-founded Solar Components in Campbell, CA. doing just that (www.solarjoos.com).  After two years of experiments and tests, the “Joos” Orange came to market and won Best of Innovations Award for the 2011 CES International Trade Show in the Eco-Design and Sustainable Technology Category.

The “Joos” emerged as a waterproof, hardy, handy device with up to 20x more efficiency than any competition, producing 20x more energy, and will charge as fast as a wall socket with a 3.0 USB.  It has been shot at with a “22”, driven over by a Mini-Cooper and remains intact; it is projected to have a 20 year life span.
- Wired.com says “When it comes to portable power-ups, our new favorite flavor is Orange… So go ahead and leave those outlets. Sucking down solar power has never been easier.”
- GIZMODO.com’s managing editor says that the Joos Orange“is the best solar charger he has ever tested”
- MobileMagazine.com calls the Joos Orange “the sweetest solar charger yet”
- Gadget Review calls the Joos Orange “the most powerful, portable solar device yet”
- ECOINSITE asks “Did Joos Just Raise the Bar for Personal Solar?”

This little device can change lives for the better, and that is exactly where Nathan is focused. A person’s income in India can double with the use of a cell phone.  Getting a cell phone is not the problem, getting it charged is.  Twenty-five percent of the world does not have access to electricity; this means there are currently 1.7 billion people in the world who don’t have electricity, and another 1.4 billion people that live with intermittent electricity.

After a nearly 2-hour long and wide-ranging interview on 10/18/10 with KSL-TV (the Utah station with the biggest audience), Nathan, the Joos Orange and the Listen Up Player were featured in a nearly 3-minute story. Here's the link to the story and a slightly longer "written" version of the story: http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&;sid=12878489.

The Sun puts out enough energy in one day to power the earth for a year. The trick is to harvest it.  The goal at Solar Components is to develop products that harness the sun’s capability in a cost-effective and efficient manner and without leaving a carbon footprint on our earth.  The Joos Orange is our first step in reaching this goal.

nathan3Through the years, Schulhof has been extensively quoted and featured in technology and consumer media, including pieces in:
- The Wall Street Journal
- Forbes
- Businessweek
- Inc.
- Success, among others.

He has been the keynote speaker at industry events (including COMDEX, CES, Fall Internet World and Apple Computer's Independent Developer Conference, among others), and has raised tens of millions of dollars in private and public equity.

Now he is working on and in the development of a product which will change the world again!  From video and digital cameras etc, which do not require batteries and only need to be charged once a year.  Charging takes 5 seconds. These products all run on extremely efficient fuel cells!
