Professional Designations
During this issue it will be tax time in the USA. Many people have someone prepare their taxes for them for a fee. These people must be knowledgeable about current and changes in tax law, understand your goals and situation as well as give advice regarding your financial position. Many people decide to let a Certified Public Account (CPA) guide them through this process and do this work.
Shouldn't we have the same high standards set in our business world as well? That is, utilizing the service of a Certified person in the industry?
Last month, the owner and Chief Entertainment Officer at Mark Sonder Productions, Inc. re-certified as a Certified Special Events Professional (CSEP). Why and what does it mean for you?
According to Julia Rutherford Silvers, CSEP and Author of Risk Management for Meetings and Events (Butterworth-Heinemann, 2008), and Professional Event Coordination (Wiley, 2004), as well as the Originator of the Event Management Body of Knowledge (EMBOK), writing in the Meetings Community Google Group in February 2011 comments that the top reasons planners should get certified are:
1. Justification of value; illustration of benchmarked competency (may have to "explain" the certification process & scope of knowledge/skills tested)
2. Differentiation from the competition
3. Credibility
4. Elevation of the profession as a whole
The CSEP was first offered in 1993. The written examination was held in August in Toronto, Canada. Mark was there amongst many others to be the first in this new professional designation. Mark has for the past 26 years always been at that cutting edge, a leader, pioneer and visionary for the meeting, event and hospitality industries. Mark was one of 17 who was awarded the CSEP at its inception in 1993.
In the book, Event Entertainment and Production, by Mark Sonder © 2004 Wiley, Richard Aaron, CMP, CSEP, Adjunct Professor at New York University and President of BiZBash in New York City, describes the importance of certifying. “Certifications are counting more and more as professionals are seeking their place in the credentialed spotlight. Meeting Professionals International’s (MPI) successful new Certified Meeting Manager (CMM) outpaces the Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) designation as proof of this trend as planners seek strategic skills as a key to enhanced recognition in the job arena. Institutions are establishing more positions for credentialed event managers as witnessed by the increased number of students studying event management in universities and educational institutions across the world. Hospitality and event management programs are also on the increase in cities across the world. They are opening the door to formal event studies programs, which is qualifying the knowledge set of young future professionals with a needed knowledge base.”
There are many “alphabet soup” certifications available today. Mark lists in his book some of them below, with their respective links, which are peripheral to the meeting and event industries.
